Honestly, I don't care about ONE missed day due to Downtime.
CCP gives plenty of warning about future Hardware upgrades and suggests that people begin LONG skill trainings during these Hardware upgrades. If people are going to put a 16hour skill on for training during a 12 hour DT, then they have no right to complain when a DT goes for possibly 24 hours.
Quote: But the fact still remains that CCP give a downtime of 12 hours then take 24 hours then we have an unstable system for days if not weeks - why do they not test the hardware or software before hand - and as I do this kind of thing for a living, I can tell you they do not test this stuff - how do I know ?, well when upgrading either hardware or software then you have to expect the unexpected, but with CCP, they get the unexpected everytime not just now and again - thus NO TESTING or very very little.
Now, I have to say that this statement is a little arrogant of you Parry. Can you honestly say that when you do a Hardware upgrade, that you do it on the magnitude that CCP does?
Whose to say that CCP don't test their new Hardware? They may well indeed test the Hardware and replicate 25K, 30K, 40K or even 50K users accessing the game at the one time. But unless they do a LIVE test, they aren't going to be able to tell that their new Hardware is properly configured to handle the userload straight of the bat and that YES it will take a few weeks to properly configure the latency issues with the new server and the only way for them to do a LIVE test, is once the new Hardware is installed and running and NO they couldn't have the test server running as the new hardware as they wouldn't get nearly enough hits to the Test Server as the proper server.
Also, with a 12 hour DT for Upgrades, do you think they're just going to be sitting around for 8 hours, eating biscuits, drinking tea and laughing at us as we pathetically roam the various EVE-related websites and forums, complaining about how crappy the new Hardware is going to be and that it sucks that it takes 12 hours to install/configure it?
No, they're going to be BUSTING THEIR BUTTS to get the new Hardware online and running for the players who pay to play the game, unfortunately people make mistakes and yes CCP make mistakes too. It might be a missed file in the DataBase transfer that causes everyone to lose all their skills if they were to log in, or perhaps certain races, Like Caldari, are wiped out (Not that it would be a bad thing for that to happen :P). Or they might have problems where the Network Database has troubles connecting to the outside world because they couldn't have the Hardware up and running earlier for a day to make sure everything is working.
But then again, wait a minute... If they properly tested the new Hardware... That would mean even more DownTime as they port it over, try and make it live... then have to constantly shutdown and reboot to fix latency issues, missed files, etc, etc.
Then return to the old Hardware, copy the changed Database back to the old hardware, get that live again, fix the latency issues, etc, etc.
Honestly, I prefer what happened today, than a proper testing of their new Hardware, etc, etc.
But then again, I only pay, play and enjoy the game... I don't look for reasons to try and screw CCP by getting 'free days' for them doing their jobs and making this game better for everyone.
